By Michael Philip We’ve seen Geoffrey’s a million times while driving up and down the Pacific Coast Highway. It is just South of Zuma beach on the West side of the road. For some reason we though it would be way beyond our reach financially. I guess it would have been too easy to call them up and ask for the prices. For this special occasion we finally decided to try this landmark (or so to speak). We made sure to get reservations in advance . Traffic from LA on this Friday evening was surprisingly light. We cruised through Malibu and arrived at the restaurant. There is free parking on the street, though a bit dangerous since cars whiz by at high speeds. We risked it and survived. Our table was very nice, right at the edge of the terrace, overlooking the Pacific. An amazing view and a certain serenity. It is a bit weird to see other people’s homes right below, but we were mesmerized by the ocean (as always) and never noticed that fact beyond that initial notice. Service was excellent at Geoffrey’s. Our server was informative, courteous, quick, polite and not overwhelming. Starter bread was really good and we had several servings. Our meal included a few glasses of Chardonnay, lobster bisque, lobster bruschetta, garden salad and the mussels. Even though the salad was not on the menu we were pleased with the offer to make us one. Lobster bisque and the mussels were very good. Salad was solid, as was the bruschetta. The meal was complimented wonderfully by the sunset and a quiet and pleasant atmosphere . Ice cream with their signature chocolate topping ended it wonderfully. Appetizers were in the teens and main dishes mostly in the mid-twenties (prices). This is not much higher than in most dinner destinations in Los Angeles. A perfect restaurant for a special occasion. We will definitely go back and enjoy the food and the surroundings. After living here for a few months, I received a call from a pest control company. They explained that they had been servicing the house previously, and would like to continue - I just needed to take over the bill. I fought it…explaining that I saw no pests, so didn’t understand why I needed to pay them. The guy wisely explained that the reason I didn’t have a pest problem was because they had been treating the house heretofore - and if I would like to continue having a pest free home, I should keep the service going. Good point. Come on out. That was 2 years ago. I never hear anything from them - except every 2 months a bill appears on my door. It’s easy to forget about them - and start to wonder why your paying that bill. Well, the other day I got a knock on my door. I’ve been meaning to call someone to do preventative treatment for termites - I didn’t know I’ve had that covered all this time. Anyway, I was so pleased that I filled out the comment form with excellent marks and fired it back. Then, to my surprise, I checked my voicemail tonight and there was a message from the company following up on the service - making sure everything was fine. Man…these folks are getting serious. Here’s the take away. First of all, the value of their service went up 3 fold for me - and they secured my business for at least another year. Second, maybe they’ve been doing this all along - but never caught my attention. That could be a critical point for your small business. Are you exceeding expectations? More importantly, do your customers know about it? Are they so busy that they just pay your bill without noticing what you do for them? How could you highlight the excellent work you do? These could be important questions to ask of yourself. I would recommend detailing the steps you take and providing that list to your clients - to be sure they fully understand the effort you make. The laughter that this simple activity generates is a joy to behold. Try this will your friends sometime. * Collect cartoons and jokes and put them on display on the fridge or the bulletin board. Make sure to avoid racist, sexist or filthy humor. The is plenty of good clean humor to go around without resorting to these. Remember that there is a difference between dirty and earthy humor. I personally like earthy humor. I dont appreciate dirty material. * Watch comedy movies and television programs as often a possible. * Use humor to neutralize conflict in your relationships. When things get tense use self deprecating humor to lighten things up. I remember one evening having an argument with my wife, Carol. In the heat of the moment she said something totally out of character. She said something hurtful. In my surprise I looked at her and said, Carol, when you say things like that you stoop to my level.
